New Guinea Harpy Eagle Project--Conservation Projects
12 Jun 08
Goal: To study the biology of the virtually unknown New Guinea Harpy Eagle, to understand its life history and ecological requirements, and to promote its conservation.
The New Guinea Harpy Eagle is one of the least-known large raptors in the world. Neither its basic biology nor population status were known until our studies began in 1999. Our goals are to complete first-ever studies on this little-known forest eagle and develop local capacity for raptor research and conservation through support and training of New Guinea nationals.
In 2007 we enhanced local capacity for conservation by supporting a New Guinea student while he developed methods to trap, band, and radio-tag New Guinea Harpy Eagles for his thesis research. With a scholarship from the Wildlife Conservation Society, he began graduate studies at the University of Kansas.
