Philippine Eagle Conservation

Goal:
Conservation of the Philippine Eagle and its habitat.

Many Filipinos feel that the Philippine Eagle is an important part of their natural heritage. The nation’s pride and hope for the future is tied to the survival of this icon—a symbol of power and strength—against the destructive forces of deforestation, poverty, and unsustainable population growth.

Since 1990, we have partnered with the Philippine Eagle Foundation on behalf of the Philippine Eagle, one of the world’s largest eagles.

In 2007 we provided the Foundation—our best hope for preserving the Philippine Eagle in the wild—with financial support for field research, a captive breeding program, and conservation education. Peregrine Fund Vice President Rick Watson joined the Foundation board and chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee, providing guidance on research initiatives, such as understanding the eagle’s spatial needs from satellite telemetry studies. Considerable research has been done but much more remains, especially regarding conservation strategies and the bird’s status in the wild.

Celebration calls for greater effort to conserve endangered eagle, habitat

Popong Landero
Popular entertainer Popong Landero performs at the Earth Hour event in Davao City calling for increased protection for the endangered Philippine Eagle.
The Philippine Eagle Foundation observed Earth Hour 2010 by honoring endangered Philippine Eagles that had been killed in the wild and calling for stricter enforcement of laws to protect them.
Children from Balay Pasilungan lit candles at the foundation’s “Who Shot the Lights Out?” event in Davao City. The celebration was part of a global effort by people in 125 nations to heighten awareness of climate change by switching off their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 29.
“Much has been invested into protecting our national bird and the forests in which they live, and yet they continue to be persecuted and their habitats destroyed,” said Executive Director Dennis Salvador.
Organizers gathered more than 200 signatures on a petition seeking greater enforcement of the Wildlife Act, Republic Act 9147, which protects the endangered Philippine Eagle and forest habitat.
The Philippine Eagle Foundation is a private non-profit dedicated to conserving the endangered raptor. Formed in 1987, the group engages in research, rehabilitation, captive breeding and public education.
The Peregrine Fund provides the foundation with financial support and scientific expertise, and Vice President Rick Watson serves on its board of directors.
