Zimbabwe--Conservation Projects
12 Jun 08
Goal: Develop local capacity for research and conservation of birds of prey through training, support, and hands-on conservation.
The Peregrine Fund’s partnership with the Zimbabwe Falconers’ Club (ZFC) began in 1983 with an investigation of the rare Teita Falcon, a species that remains a focus of our program today. Work began expanding in 1990 to address a wide range of raptor research and conservation issues with investigations into the effects of DDT on the Peregrine Falcon and other raptors, ecology of little known species, effects of habitat change on raptors, captive breeding of Teita Falcons, and educational programs for students. Much of this work has been published in scientific and popular journals, and the successes of the ZFC in mobilizing falconers, game ranchers, farmers, and others to help with raptor conservation and research serve as a model to others around the world.
Due to continuing law and order and economic problems in Zimbabwe, we accomplished little new field work there this year. Valuable progress was made with preparing Ron Hartley’s data for publication. We annually evaluate our potential contribution to raptor research and conservation in Zimbabwe, and hope to step up efforts again when it becomes feasible to work effectively in this country.
