Species of the month

Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus)

The Peregrine Falcon is famous for its fast flying. Biologists have clocked it diving at speeds of over 200 mph. By the 1960s, Peregrine Falcons were gone from the eastern United States and large portions of the western states. After an amazing recovery, Peregrine Falcons were removed from the endangered species list in 1999.

You can have a chance to meet a Peregrine Falcon when you visit the World Center for Birds of Prey. Gus, pictured above, has been with us since 2001.

This month, you can also watch live video from a Peregrine Falcon nest in downtown Boise, Idaho at peregrinefund.org/falconcam.
