Asian Vulture Population Project

People Participating in Conservation - Your Help Needed Now!
Latest Update: July 2008

The Need:
Populations of three Asian vulture species (Oriental white-backed vulture G.bengalensis, Long-billed vulture G.indicus, and Slender-billed vulture G.tenuirostris) have declined catastrophically in India, Pakistan, and Nepal since the early 1990s, prompting the IUCN to classify their status as critically endangered.

To help vulture conservation efforts, we urgently need to identify the location of all remaining breeding colonies of each species. This information will be used by conservation planners, national governments, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to help prevent their extinction.

The huge geographical area occupied by these species is too great for any individual or organization to survey alone in the short time available. We have turned to the internet to develop a new, real-time, collaborative project to generate the information that is needed.

Aim:
The Asian Vulture Population Project is a community effort hosted by The Peregrine Fund to record and monitor changing vulture populations over time using the internet to gather and disseminate up-to-date, verified data provided by volunteers across Asia.

How it Works:
The Asian Vulture Population Project provides up-to-date locations and summaries of the known breeding populations of three Asian vulture species. It is a factual data resource for the use of all, compiled and verified from information received from observers across the range of these species.

Information is represented geographically, with a range-wide map indicating the positions of breeding colonies reported so far. More detailed maps can be reached by clicking on the regional views on the range-wide map. Detailed information on current and past (where this data exists) breeding numbers of vultures from each site is provided in tables accessed by clicking on the colony site key alongside the detailed maps.

How You Can Help!!
The success of this effort is entirely dependant on your help. We invite you to assist in this collaborative effort, by providing information on vulture colonies known to you that can be shared with all.

All contributors will be fully acknowledged for the information that they provide. Each record will be accompanied by a reference to the contributor. With your consent, we will include your contact details so that other vulture researchers will be able to reach you should they require additional information.

If you know of a breeding site for any of the three species, then please contact: vulturestudy@peregrinefund.org
